PICKING THE PERFECT CREATIVE AGENCY

Nearly all emergent companies and entrepreneurs have this single debate; do we hire a full time UX/UI designer or contract an agency as and when needed? Each option has its ups and downs.

This is something you, as a leader of your company/department, need to figure out. Creative agencies can bring experience and expertise to your project, at a faction of the long term costs of hiring a team, helping you to scale quickly and jump start your project at rapid pace. Sometimes a project will be ongoing over long periods and its more cost effective to hire a team. Set your expectations for time, cost and quality, and the decision to hire a team or contract an agency should be clear.

But, if you are reading this, you have probably already decided you need a creative agency. Now, how do you choose the right agency for your project, product and/or business?

Set your End Goal 

Search for agencies that have worked in your industry or have done projects that you really like! Sometimes you simply need UI design and other times you need a full-service that rolls in branding, strategy, UX/UI, mobile design, web design and even help raising capital. Shortlist the ones you get the best feeling from and give them all a call, tell them about your business and the end result you intend to achieve, then have them create a proposal for you.

When searching for the right agencies, in the end, only one agency will win your business. Rest assured, it’s absolutely ok to let agencies pitch for your business. Check if they have done their research

The agencies that will standout are those who have done their research into your market and how to best help you reach your goal. It is also important they have the right skill sets and sufficient knowledge to execute your project. Design agencies that are willing to go the extra mile to fully understand your product, demonstrate their findings on the market and on what they believe your target audience really wants, are ones to go with!

Ask how they will work with your team

Never hire an agency that you do not have chemistry with. When agencies report back, discuss their proposal with your team making sure you keep an eye on how they approach sensitive problems and how they bring across these points. You don’t want to work with agencies who are not helpful or you cannot easily bond with.

The exceptional agencies work as an extension of your team and collaborate with you to deliver the result you want. Sometimes, however, you simply want to hand the project over and not think about it until it’s done. Set expectations from the very start and be sure to ask how the agency likes to work.

Find out if they are passionate about your cause?

This is such an important part. You NEED a team who love what you do! It should never be ‘just another job’! It should resonate with the agencies team, they should be excited and even honored to be a part of your vision. Positive energy is crucial when the going gets tough!

This is why a bigger agency does not already mean that they would be better than smaller agency. The small guys can be more dedicated to your cause and are more economical too. Those that are willing to put in all efforts to deeply understand your customer’s needs, understand the market and match them with your company’s north star metric, will bring you so much more value.
